Jimmy’s insomnia posed a special problem for me: LIFE had assigned me to do a possible cover of Jimmy, and I made several appointments to shoot him. Sometimes he didn’t show up at all, and when he did, he’d look like utter hell - a two or three day growth of beard, and enormous bags under his eyes.
